"Peter's knowledge of the private sector and his background in both banking and procurement will be invaluable in helping us achieve our goals."
Peter Fanning said:
"I am delighted to be joining John Oughton's team at OGC at such an exciting time in the evolution of public services. I hope that my varied experience will enable me to support colleagues as they strive to improve services to the public through better procurement and more efficient operations."
The Office of Government Commerce (OGC), working with departments and the wider public sector, will play a key role in delivering efficiency improvements. OGC is an independent office of HM Treasury. It works as a catalyst to achieve best value for money in commercial activities. Against an initial target of £1 billion, OGC achieved Value for Money (VFM) gains of £1.6 billion up to March 2003.
Between 2003/04 and 2005/06 its target is to deliver £3 billion VFM gains in central civil government procurement. A new target was set for the Spending Review 2004 period to deliver a further £3 billion VFM saving by 2007/08 in central government civil procurement through improvement in the success rate of programmes and projects and through other commercial initiatives.
