Case Studies

The DWP Change Lifecycle (CL) was first introduced in 2002 in order to provide projects with support in creating their plans and doing the work without "reinventing the wheel" each time. The CL contributes to the successful delivery of change by defining an approach that:

  • provides standard product templates
  • re-uses expertise and tools
  • shortens overall project timescales
  • provides a structure through which best practice and lessons learned can be shared
  • provides a customised/tailored approach, i.e. one size doesn't fit all.

DWP has many different types of project, requiring development of different sets of CL products in a different sequence. To reflect this reality, the CL has a "routemap" for each common type of project and one for programmes. The project routemaps are:

  • Bespoke IT Development
  • Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Selection and Configuration
  • COTS Configuration
  • Business Change.

A routemap consists of a project or programme lifecycle, with stages, gates, deliverables, products and processes which are appropriate for that type of project or programme.
