IT Power Management Link
The National Energy Foundation (NEF) indicated that around 20-30% of users do not switch off computers during non-working hours.  Leaving computers and monitors on during non-working hours wastes both energy and increases carbon emissions.  The most cost-effective solution is for individual users to ensure that they switch off both the computer and monitor during non-working hours. However, due to IT requirements a switch-off campaign or utilising the computer's in-built hibernation mode may not be suitable.  In such cases IT Power Management should be considered.

ICT Power Management is software 'patch' used to reduce electricity demand thereby reducing costs and carbon emissions from PC usage.  This software can remotely switch off desktop computers during non-working hours. It also allows computers to be temporarily switched back on for IT upgrades and batch processes to be run.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has put in place a pan government framework agreement for this software.  This is a single-supplier framework with 1E and is available until May 2012. 

Accessing this framework will provide demonstrable benefits including:

  • Energy savings (kWh) 
  • CO2 savings 
  • Licence fee savings (30% discount) 
  • Process savings e.g. tendering costs 
  • Short payback period - typically 6-12 months 
  • Supports the CO & CIO Greening Government IT Strategy 
  • Applicable for Salix funding
