The Public Sector Procurement Conference - 7th February 2008
Released on 15/02/2008
David Shields, from OGC's Collaborative Procurement Directorate told an audience of over 400 public sector procurement colleagues that collaborative category management would be key to delivering the £30bn annual savings government expects to be delivered by March 2011, the end of the CSR07 period.
Speaking at the recent National Procurement Conference at the City of Manchester Stadium, David highlighted the successes that had been achieved in this area in SR04 and called on all organisations in the public sector to commit to work together on the procurement of commonly used goods and services. He pointed out that OGC's Public Sector Procurement and Expenditure Survey has shown that around £72bn is spent each year on common goods and services - a significant proportion of this is from within the wider public sector.
At the same event, Sam Woods, Value for Money Team Leader in HMT, told delegates why the Treasury believes procurement is an important potential delivery mechanism for achieving the savings target in CSR07. He said procurement efficiency gains were likely to amount to 38% of the Gershon target of £21.5bn by March 2008.
