Commercial Intelligence

Purpose:

Information on a company or companies can be used to help selection in a procurement activity and in product evaluation. It is also useful to have when meeting with suppliers as they are usually informed of the client and an even (or enhanced in your favour) position can be maintained.

Fitness for purpose content:

  • How recent is it?
  • How relevant is it?
  • How accurate is it?
  • How comprehensive is it?
  • Can someone use it to help make informed decisions?

Suggested content:

  • Description why the intelligence is being gathered
  • Description of activity, service or product if applicable
  • Type of activity
  • Risk and issues
  • Market information
  • Financial situation of company - including those any parent or parents.
  • Feedback of performance on contracts - from dealings with similar sized organisations
  • Other relevant information in the news or from other sources
  • A conclusion or line to take if necessary
  • Acknowledgements
  • Disclaimer (if necessary)

Source information:

  • Information on the activity, service or product, and those of the previously identified comparables.
  • Raw financial and marketing material may be provided by the company, or financial information may be obtained from third parties.
  • Searches will have to be conducted to identify contacts for commercial performance feedback - often supplier provided information will only be what they want you to know.
