Sustainable Food

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the lead department for the policy on Sustainable Food and has set up the Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative (PSFPI). This is to deliver a world class sustainable farming and food sector, that contributes to a better environment, with healthier and more prosperous communities.

The OGC has an advisory role within the PSFPI and the Food Procurement Implementation Group (FPIG), to ensure that food purchasers are able to work in line with PSFPI objectives, while remaining within the UK policy and legal framework.

Further guidance can be found at Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative (PSFPI)

The National Audit Office (NAO) March 2006 report into Smarter Food Procurement in the Public Sector identified that in England alone, the public sector spends more than £2 billion on providing food and drink to service users, staff and the general public. The NAO report identified six areas of performance improvements that could be made.

OGC is committed to working with Defra to achieve related improvements in public sector food procurement.
