Risk Potential Assessment (RPA)

The RPA is the first step in the OGC Gateway process. It provides a standard set of high-level criteria for assessing the degree of complexity of a proposed acquisition based programme/project.

Rapid Risk Check sheet

The Rapid Risk Check sheet is a simple tool that helps you identify uncertainty (risks relating to scope, process and skills) over the life of the project.

Capability and Capacity

Portfolio, Programme and Project Management Maturity Model (P3M3).

When you need a thorough examination of your organisation's capability to manage portfolios of programmes and projects, you should use the P3M3. It has a similar approach to maturity as the well-recognised Carnegie-Melon Maturity Model (CMMM) and is based on OGC's existing portfolio, programme and project management best practice. The model has been revised to align with developments in the OGC's portfolio and to include a self-assessment questionnaire. To obtain the best results any assessment should be undertaken by experience portfolio, programme and project management practitioners.

Organisational benefits of using P3M3
It is important for any organisation to understand the level of performance that is optimal for their organisation in its search to maximize value for money from its investments. Very few organisations would be able to achieve the highest level, and for many the middle levels may well be most appropriate to meet the needs of their business and its aspirations.

Improvement should be seen as part of long term performance improvement to gain the maximum effect of using P3M3, however, it is possible to gain short-term performance gains from using P3M3 to identify performance weaknesses.

New version P3M3
The current version is a public consultation draft and the OGC invites comments from users and experts alike. We welcome comments on the model itself as well as the self-assessment questionnaire. Such feedback will help us develop the model further by understanding how the model is used and how organisations are benefiting from using the model.

For details of the model please visit the website dedicated to all matters relating to P3M3

For comments purely about the model please contact us on P3M3model@ogc.gsi.gov.uk

A self-assessment questionnaire (PDF, 311KB) has been developed to complement P3M3 version 2. The self-assessment questionnaire is being piloted in a number of organisations and longer term we are looking to understand how organisations are using the model and the benefits they accrue as a consequence. If your organisation would like to contribute to this activity, please download the self-assessment at http://www.p3m3-officialsite.com/Publications/Publications.asp and contact us at P3M3assessment@ogc.gsi.gov.uk to discuss your experience.

PRINCE2 Maturity Model

The purpose of the PRINCE2 Maturity Model is to enable organisations to gauge, by assessment, their maturity in the use of the PRINCE2 project management method. The model can also be used to:

  • understand the key practices that are part of an effective organisational process to manage projects
  • identify the key practices that need to be embedded within the organisation to achieve the next level of maturity
  • understand the rationale behind the assessment questionnaire.
