OGC helps Government to exceed target for 2004-2005

Central Government achieved £2.3 billion worth of value for money gains in 2004-2005 - exceeding its target, Financial Secretary to the Treasury John Healey has revealed.

More than £1 billion of the gains are savings made by Government departments and their agencies getting better deals on goods and services, bought either through direct negotiation with suppliers or joint procurement.

The £2.3 billion gains bring the total savings for the first two years - since the 2002 Spending Review - to £4.3 billion.

This exceeds the target of £3 billion a whole year earlier, and brings OGC well on track to deliver the combined £6 billion target by 2007-2008.

Treasury Minister John Healey MP, responsible for the OGC, said: "This is good news for the tax payer as Government departments meet - and exceed - the £3 billion value for money targets."

OGC Chief Executive John Oughton said: "I am delighted that the Office of Government Commerce has supported the delivery of these savings.

"This success reflects the work OGC has been doing to encourage better procurement and project management across central civil Government."
