New £135m hospital adopting sustainable practices - OGC's Achieving Excellence in Construction

Released on 29/03/2006

Significant benefits can be achieved when sustainable solutions are incorporated into a construction project, as shown in this OGC case study.

The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust - one of the UK's largest NHS trusts - has been working with Carillion Health to deliver a £135 million public finance initiative (PFI) contract of new building works to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

When completed, this will provide general hospital services, in modern buildings with state-of-the-art equipment, to Oxfordshire's 625,000 people and specialist services to about 2.3 million in the county, surrounding areas and beyond.

Together, the Trust and Carillion Health have implemented sustainability and biodiversity action plans. They have enabled the project to maximise value for money, bringing about a positive impact on both the environment and local community.

The importance of adopting sustainable solutions in construction projects is highlighted in OGC's Achieving Excellence Sustainability Guide (AE11)

The sustainability and biodiversity action plans has led to the implementation of successful initiatives. These provided the project with numerous benefits, three of which are highlighted below:

  • A waste management company was employed to dispose of and segregate waste, enabling more than 90 per cent (36 tonnes) to be diverted from landfill each month;
  • A green transport plan was introduced for site workers, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least one fifth (20 per cent);
  • Linoleum - biodegradable and made from renewable raw materials - was selected for 60 per cent of the flooring. It does not need to be replaced for 25 years, compared to the typical 10-15 years for vinyl, thus providing a potential saving of £264K over the project's lifespan.
