The telecommunications industry is undergoing significant change as it migrates to 'next generation networks' and central government and the wider public sector are embracing this new technology and the benefits to efficiency and effectiveness that it can provide for the public sector.
OGC, in consultation with government departments and industry bodies, has developed standards, guidance and model conditions that should be applied to virtually all telecommunications related procurements.
The procurement standards and guidelines are available through the OGC website's document library.
Next generation networks consolidate a range of services like the transmission of voice and data on to a single platform using technology such as internet protocol. These modern telecommunications network services will benefit the UK by allowing greater functionality and flexibility and reducing costs. However they present potential new risks.
In order to address these risks, public sector organisations should only contract with service providers that have demonstrably invested in robust security and risk mitigation measures. For more information take a look at the telecommunications procurement standards and guidance.
