OGC to launch graduate recruitment scheme for government procurement

Released on 23/03/2007

The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) is establishing a new Graduate Recruitment Scheme as part of the reformed Government Procurement Service (GPS).

The scheme, which will be accepting applications from April, is the first in a series of new initiatives from the Government Procurement Service and will see new high-calibre entrants joining and supporting government procurement teams.

The procurement trainees will be put through an accelerated two-year development process, including placements in a range of central government departments as well as formal training, leading to membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). It is expected that entrants will be promoted on successful completion of the scheme. There will be up to 15 posts in the 2007 pilot, working across seven participating departments.

The requirement to regenerate the GPS was highlighted in Transforming Government Procurement, a report launched by the Financial Secretary to the Treasury earlier this year and represents a key component of OGC's new remit. The aim is to encourage professionalism, attract high-calibre staff, encourage innovation and provide a framework that enables senior procurement professionals to develop the high level of procurement capability required by government. Ultimately this will support the delivery of more reliable, efficient and effective public services, whilst delivering savings on the goods and services bought.

The reformed GPS will create a sustainable balance of appropriately skilled and suitably managed procurement professionals to match the growing scale and complexity of government's delivery agenda.

Details of the Government Procurement Service's long-term strategy and further supporting initiatives will be released later this spring.
