Government Procurement Graduate Scheme receives more than 200 applications

Released on 04/06/2007

The Government Procurement Graduate Scheme has been hailed a great success having received 222 eligible applications.

The scheme forms part of the reformed Government Procurement Service (GPS) strategy to help ensure the availability of quality procurement professionals to government.

This pilot scheme aims to recruit up to 15 posts in 2007. Seven departments, including HM Revenue and Customs and the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency have committed to support the scheme. And others including the Central Office of Information, HM Prison Service and the Olympic Delivery Authority have expressed an interest to participate by hosting a graduate. Eventually, the scheme aims to deliver around 20 graduates a year to a broader range of departments.

The GPS team and OGC Service Desk fielded a wide range of questions from potential applicants but the novel use of on-line competency based questions allowed many applicants to assess their eligibility before applying.

The scheme will take high-calibre graduate entrants, as procurement trainees and put them through an accelerated two-year development process. This will include a series of placements in a range of procurement posts in central government departments. It will also provide formal training, potentially leading to membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). It is expected that entrants will be promoted on successful completion of the scheme.

Applications are being sifted before those shortlisted are invited to attend an assessment day. The first deployment of Government Procurement Graduate Scheme trainees will take place in September 2007.
