Environmental Issues

Procurement takes account of environmental considerations and it is important for procurement to be completely sustainable. This contributes to the long term goal of sustainable development and, ultimately, achieves the objectives in the UK's Sustainable Development Strategy.

There is considerable scope to consider environmental issues in public purchasing, within the context of the European Union procurement rules, the UK's procurement policy with value for money, and ongoing efficiency work. This scope is outlined in detail in the joint guidance of OGC and Defra, Environmental Issues in Purchasing, which illustrates how a range of environmental considerations can be incorporated into different stages of the procurement process.

Some key areas of work involving environmental issues include:

Environmental Audit Committee

The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) was first established in November 1997. Members come from across the three main political parties. The committee is charged with monitoring the contribution made by Government departments and agencies to environmental protection and sustainable development and auditing progress against targets. This has included enquiries on Sustainable Procurement, Sustainable Timber and Sustainable Development Reporting in Government.
