Natural resource protection

Natural resources are crucial for the construction and operation of the government estate. Chief among these resources are water and timber.

While water is thought of a renewable and relatively abundant resource in the UK, ensuring a sustainable water resource into the future is an important element of the sustainable development strategy.  The government is therefore committed to reducing water wastage on the office estate.

Timber is incredibly important in the construction and maintenance of government offices. The government itself is a major purchaser of timber, much of which is imported. Therefore, as a consumer government has a responsibility to ensure that it purchases timber from sources that are both sustainable and legal, backed by recognised certification.
