Social Issues in Purchasing

Sustainable development covers three pillars - social, economic and environmental issues - as outlined in the UK's Sustainable Development Strategy. Procurement undertaken in support of this strategy, may also include considerations from the three areas. Therefore, social issues will need to be incorporated into the procurement process, where they are relevant to the subject of the contract, and assist in delivering value for money for the contracting authority.

OGC has produced a guidance note (PDF) on the scope, to include social considerations into the procurement process - in line with the overarching legal and policy framework of value for money and the EU rules. This note, Social Issues in Purchasing, seeks to illustrate how a range of policy issues can be included at the different stages of the procurement process.
